Intersection safety and efficiency is a key priority for the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT). WisDOT evaluates design alternatives to determine whether a signal, roundabout, or other intersection control is best suited for a given location based on safety, efficiency, and estimated cost, along with other considerations.
Roundabouts are found at one percent of the intersections on the state highway system. As of January 2024, eight percent of state-controlled intersections have traffic signals. Of the state's 587 roundabouts, 305 are on state highways and 282 are on local roads.
Roundabouts may be considered as an alternative when building new intersections or when existing intersections are reconstructed to address safety or operational needs. Several benefits of roundabouts include:
- They are proven to reduce the number of fatal and severe injury crashes
- They reduce congestion by reducing delays and improving traffic flow
- They provide a greener alternative with less vehicle idling, lower fuel emissions and less wasted fuel
